What Is an Underbite?

An underbite occurs when the lower teeth overlap the upper teeth, creating a misalignment. This can be caused by many issues such as your genetics, childhood habits (like thumb sucking or chewing on pens), or jaw development issues. Left untreated, underbites can lead to many issues such as speech problems, excessive tooth wear, and jaw pain.

How Invisalign Works

Invisalign uses a series of custom-made, clear aligners that gradually shift your teeth into the correct position. These aligners are removable, virtually invisible, and much more comfortable than traditional metal braces.  For underbites, Invisalign works by targeting special movements of both your upper and lower teeth to improve alignment. In some cases, attachments with elastics treatments may be used to achieve the best  results.

Can Invisalign Fix All Types of Underbites?

Invisalign is most effective for mild to moderate underbites. Severe underbites—especially those caused by skeletal issues may require a combination of Invisalign and orthognathic surgery. During your initial consultation, your provider will evaluate the cause and severity of your underbite using 3D scans or X-rays. From there, they’ll create a custom Invisalign treatment plan tailored to your unique needs.
